At the end of the year, Rothenburg presents itself from its most attractive side. Embedded in the picturesque setting between the Town Hall and St. James' Church, the Christmas Market is considered by many to be the most charming in Germany.

Music is in the foreground, a treat for the ear, with choral singing, deep-brass ensembles and bands, performing classical and popular holiday works. These provide the musical framework for the festivities while colorful decorations adorn the ancient homes and shops, delighting the eye.

Some 50 stands will entice guests with delicious, beloved Franconian culinary treats such as crispy fried Bratwürste, savory Flammkuchen and finely-seasoned gingerbread Lebkuchen and dozens of holiday favorites.

Of course, spicy, piping-hot white, mulled Glühwein -- a Franconian specialty -- distilled spirits, and other taste treats will delight the palette, their aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and brown sugar perfuming the air.

Beautiful Christmas ornaments, hand-made apparel, unique gift items, household décor and hand-crafted works presented by a bevy of artisans, as well as the world-renowned “mother of all Christmas stores,” Käthe Wohlfahrt, are offered for sale. Traditional Christmas stocking stuffers and other gifts abound; and, the German National Christmas Museum is adjacently located in the Wohlfahrt main store building, too.
